Expansive Front Deck Overlooking Lake Whatcom
Bellingham, WA

Located in Bellingham, WA, this expansive front deck was designed to take full advantage of the home’s elevated position overlooking Lake Whatcom. Stretching across most of the entire front of the residence, the large deck and stair system create a generous outdoor living space where homeowners and guests can enjoy the surrounding landscape and sweeping lake views.
To complement the scale of the deck while maintaining a timeless appearance, we installed a Classic Vertical Picket railing system. The traditional vertical picket design provides a clean, balanced look that pairs well with the home’s architecture while ensuring safety and durability across the long deck span and stairway.
Careful layout and precise installation were essential to maintain consistent spacing and alignment along the full length of the deck and stair run. The finished railing system provides both security and openness, allowing the stunning Lake Whatcom views to remain the focal point while enhancing the overall presence of the home’s outdoor living space.
This project highlights how a thoughtfully installed railing system can bring structure, safety, and refined design to a large residential deck while preserving the natural beauty of its surroundings.

Why Aluminum Is Superior in the Pacific Northwest

In the Pacific Northwest, railing systems are exposed to consistent rain, moisture, and seasonal temperature changes. Choosing the right material is essential not only for appearance, but for long-term durability and performance. While steel railings are commonly used, aluminum railings are better suited for the PNW climate, making them a smarter investment for exterior and interior applications.
Built to Withstand Moisture and Rain
One of the most important advantages aluminum has over steel is its natural resistance to corrosion. Unlike steel, aluminum does not rust. Instead, it forms a protective oxide layer that prevents moisture from breaking down the material. In a region known for frequent rain and damp conditions, aluminum railings maintain their structural integrity and appearance far longer than steel alternatives.
Minimal Maintenance in a Wet Climate
Steel railings in the Pacific Northwest often require regular maintenance to prevent rust — including sanding, repainting, or touch-ups as moisture penetrates the finish. Aluminum railings, especially those finished with a powder-coated surface, require very little upkeep. A simple wash with mild soap and water is typically enough to keep them looking clean and well-maintained year-round.
Ideal for Outdoor Decks, Stairs, and Balconies
Because aluminum is lightweight yet strong, it is well-suited for elevated decks, stair systems, and multi-level outdoor spaces commonly found in Northwest homes. Aluminum railing systems can be custom fabricated to meet local building codes while maintaining clean sightlines and modern design aesthetics.
Long-Term Durability and Finish Performance
Powder-coated aluminum railings hold up exceptionally well in the Pacific Northwest’s climate. The finish resists peeling, chipping, and fading — even with constant exposure to rain and seasonal sun. This ensures a consistent, high-end appearance without the need for frequent refinishing.
Modern Design That Complements Northwest Architecture
From contemporary homes to craftsman and modern builds, aluminum railing systems offer design flexibility that complements a wide range of architectural styles. Clean profiles, precise fabrication, and custom layouts allow aluminum railings to enhance outdoor living spaces while maintaining a refined, architectural look.
A Smarter Long-Term Investment
While steel railings may appear cost-effective initially, ongoing maintenance and potential corrosion-related repairs can add up quickly in a wet climate. Aluminum railings provide better long-term value by reducing maintenance costs and offering a longer lifespan — making them a reliable choice for homeowners throughout the Pacific Northwest.
